Academic and Career Planning

Academic and Career Planning and PI-26

Academic and Career Planning, or ACP, is a student-driven, adult-supported process in which students create and cultivate their own unique and information-based visions for post-secondary success, obtained through self-exploration, career exploration, and the development of career management and planning skills.
MISSION: Empowering ALL students to travel the road TO adulthood THROUGH education and training to careers.
VISION: Re-imagining K-12 education to equip students:
**With meaningful and supportive adult relationships
**And the ability to adapt to opportunities and challenges
**On their personalized journeys to successful lives
-Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction
The Albany School District also believes in and works to cultivate these ideals through our own mission: "Every child prepared for life" and vision: "In partnership with parents and the community, the Albany School District provides an innovative learning environment that supports a foundation, which prepares students to achieve their individual potentials".

Each student's Academic and Career Plan will include 4 different parts that will always continue to change and push the student to continue pursuing their goals and exploring themselves.  These parts include: KNOW, EXPLORE, PLAN, and GO.  There will never truly be an end to this process and we will always encourage students to continue to grow and cultivate this process throughout school and beyond.

**A main goal of the Albany School District, through Academic and Career Planning, is to equip all students with the ability to practice and refine skills they may need in preparation for college, technical college, the workforce, military, or whatever direction our students choose to pursue.

Preparation of Students in the Albany School District
Our students will take a variety of classes to give them both preparation and experience with many academic and experiential learning possibilities and opportunities.  Our students will meet graduation requirements: 4 credits of English, 3 credits of Math, 3 credits of Science, 3 credits of Social Studies, 0.5 credits of Personal Finance, 0.5 credits of Health, and 1.5 credits of Physical Education.  The rest of a student's elective credits may be chosen in areas that they would like more knowledge or experience in or to give them an opportunity to explore different subject areas that they are interested in pursuing.

Parent/Guardian and Community Involvement
There are many ways the Albany School District will reach out to parents/guardians and community members in the development and support of the Academic and Career Planning process.
**Students will be given opportunities to discuss their current Academic and Career Planning Portfolios in both 8th and 11th grade individual planning meetings with the school counselor.
**Parents/guardians will receive important and pertinent information through letters and newsletter articles.  These updates will include information about Xello (formerly Career Cruising), Academic and Career Planning activities or opportunities, and expectations of students, parents/guardians, and community members through the development of Academic and Career Plans.
**Community members and businesses will be asked to participate in career fairs, job shadow opportunities, or internship and job opportunities for students.

Support and Participation for ALL Students in Grades 6-12
The Albany School District will work continuously to ensure all students in grades 6-12 are receiving individual, small group, and classroom level support in the creation of their Academic and Career Plans.  Students will work with their teacher/advisor in the completion of Xello (formerly Career Cruising) lessons and in discussions about what students are learning and how that knowledge can be applied in and out of school.  Students will also have opportunities to engage in other Academic and Career Planning activities, such as college fairs, career days, Youth Apprenticeship, dual enrollment courses, classroom speakers and field trips, Colony Brands Career Expo, ACT Prep, service learning hours, classroom lessons, and more.
**Students with Individualized Education Plans, 504 Plans, and other educational or social/emotional accommodation plans will be given opportunities to engage or participate in these additional activities and will work not only with their teacher/advisor, but also their case manager in completing Xello (formerly Career Cruising) lessons.  These plans will also aid or be available for transition meetings when discussing the student's needs or next steps.

Advisory and Xello (formerly Career Cruising)
Students will work with class advisors, in small groups of 10-15 students, one time per month on Xello (formerly Career Cruising) lessons that will help students explore career possibilities, college options, job shadow opportunities, student learning styles, and career interests.  Students will be able to save careers, colleges, extracurricular activities, service learning hours, skills, previous jobs, goals, scholarships, and more.   Xello (formerly Career Cruising) will be the main online resource where students will research, explore, and save information they are gathering for their Academic and Career Plans.  These will be looked through by advisors each year to ensure students are utilizing time and resources to further their own goals towards graduation, college, the workforce, etc.  Student portfolios, lessons, and experiential learning opportunities will culminate with a senior presentation in front of a panel of teachers and/or community members.  This is an opportunity for seniors to put all the pieces together and show others how they are or plan to implement their Academic and Career Plan.

Always an Evolving and Developing Process
Academic and Career Planning is a relatively new concept for students, parents/guardians, and community members in the Albany School District and therefore will continue to evolve as we learn about student needs, local workforce needs, and how our students are utilizing these plans for successful development towards their future endeavors.
